Abstract: Charles-Ange Laisant (1841-1920), a mathematician of the late nineteenth century with an interest in discrete mathematics, remains relatively little known despite several biographical and bibliographical studies devoted to him. His name is today chiefly associated with the publication of mathematical pieces intended for a wide readership and with contributions on mathematics education (particularly elementary mathematics) in which he emphasized manipulation and visualization as pathways to lead children toward abstraction and a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. The purpose of the present contribution is to highlight, through two letters received by Laisant in February 1906 following the publication of his popular work Initiation mathématique, that Charles-Ange Laisant, the Florentine Alberto Conti (1873–1940), and the Pisan Giulio Lazzeri (1861–1935) belonged to a shared network of mathematicians who exhibited a keen, if not research-oriented, interest in mathematics education and teacher training.
