| Abstract: | In this article, Yannick Vincent offers a detailed historical and mathematical study of the connections between two prominent 19th-century French mathematicians: Edmond Laguerre (1845-1886) and Charles Hermite (1822-1901). While both are well known for their contributions (each lending their name to a family of orthogonal polynomials) Vincent's purpose is to uncover a deeper and more nuanced intellectual relationship between the two. Through a close examination of Laguerre's work on polynomial equations, Vincent highlights both the influence Hermite had on Laguerre and the points of philosophical and methodological convergence between their respective mathematical practices. |
