Abstract: This editorial introduces the QROM special issue on "Research methods for the performative and communicative study of organizing and organizations". It explores the evolving landscape of performative and communicative research methods in organizational studies. It traces the performative turn in social sciences, emphasizing how phenomena like strategy, leadership, and authority are not merely observed but enacted through communication. Diverse conceptualizations of performativity—from speech acts and critical theory to socio-materiality and affect—argue for methodological reflexivity and empirical richness. Drawing on contributions to the special issue, the editorial showcases innovative approaches such as diffractive vignettes, autoethnography, and Ricoeur’s triple mimesis, which foreground the researcher’s embodied and affective engagement. It calls for more empirical work that centers performativity and communication as core forces of organizing, while challenging traditional subject-object distinctions. Ultimately, the editorial positions performative research as a transformative, ethically engaged practice that not only studies organizations but actively participates in shaping them.
