| Résumé : | Le chapitre intitulé « Johnny » de l’autobiographie inachevée de Klári von Neumann (née Klára Dán), la seconde épouse de Johnny von Neumann, débute ainsi : « I would like to tell about the man, the strange contradictory and controversial person; childish and good-humoured, sophisticated and savage, brilliantly clever yet with a very limited, almost primitive lack of ability to handle his emotions – an enigma of nature that will have to remain unresolved. » Tenter de cerner l’insaisissable Johnny von Neumann à travers une exploration de son œuvre intellectuelle et des véritables révolutions scientifiques que celle-ci initia est le défi que s’est fixé le londonnien Ananyo Bhattacharya, et ce dès sa toute première expérience comme biographe et auteur. Considérant l’incroyable envergure de la contribution de von Neumann à l’avancement de la science, nul biographe ne peut prétendre avoir une maîtrise complète de toutes les subtilités de l’entièreté des sujets devant être traités. Diplômé en physique de University of Oxford, titulaire d’un PhD obtenu au Imperial College London et fort d’une expérience comme journaliste scientifique chez The Economist et Nature, Bhattacharya fait la démonstration dans The Man from the Future: The Visionary Life of John von Neumann qu’il est qu’adéquatement outillé pour relever le défi. |
