Abstract:	French priest Charles Étienne Brasseur de Bourbourg is one of the first translators of the Popol Vuh, a historical tale of the Maya Quiché (K'iche') people of today’s Guatemala. This French translation is significant because, until the mid-20th century, many of the new translations were based on Brasseur de Bourbourg’s version published in 1861. In order to situate Brasseur de Bourbourg’s work, we approached his translation from the perspective of paratext. This enabled us to understand what motivated his work and the way he translated the document.
